Colleges That Superscore the SAT and ACT, Plus Score Choice Rules (Fall 2027)

By Jeremy M. Fine, Founder of ConnectPrep · Updated October 2026

We checked the score-use rules of 209 colleges on their own admissions pages for fall 2027 entry. Of the 196 that use test scores, 135 superscore the SAT and 128 superscore the ACT. Only 10 say they do not superscore the SAT and 21 say they do not superscore the ACT, including Georgetown, UT Austin, Texas A&M, Penn State, Michigan State and Wisconsin. Just 3 colleges require every score you have ever earned (Denison University, Florida Gulf Coast University and Syracuse University), while 25 ask you to send all scores and still superscore them.

Last verified October 17, 2026 against each college’s official admissions, testing policy and FAQ pages, plus state board rules for public systems. Next review January 2027.

What superscoring, Score Choice and self-reporting mean

Superscoring means a college takes your highest section scores from different test dates and combines them into a new total. On the SAT, that is your best Reading and Writing score plus your best Math score. On the ACT, colleges average your best English, Math and Reading scores into a new composite (Science is optional on the enhanced ACT and most colleges leave it out). If you scored 680 Math in March and 720 in June, and 700 Reading and Writing in March and 660 in June, a superscoring college sees 1420 even though you never scored above 1380 on one day.

Single sitting means the college uses your best total score from one test date and does not mix sections across dates.

Score Choice is a College Board feature that lets you pick which SAT test dates to send. ACT lets you choose which test dates to send as well. Most colleges let you use these freely. A few require all scores, and some recommend sending every score because they superscore anyway, so a weak date cannot hurt you.

Self-reported scores are scores you type into the Common App or a college portal instead of paying to send an official report. Colleges that accept them ask for official reports only if you enroll, and a mismatch can cost you the offer.

Colleges that do not superscore the SAT or ACT

These colleges told applicants, on their own pages, that they use a single sitting or a single composite. If you apply to any of them, a second test date only helps if your total score on that one day goes up.

College SAT superscore ACT superscore What the college says

Colleges that require or recommend sending all scores

All scores required: Denison University, Florida Gulf Coast University and Syracuse University. Denison and Florida Gulf Coast ask for every section score from every sitting. Syracuse says that applicants using SAT Score Choice should be aware all test scores will be required.

All scores recommended: Auburn University, Barnard College, Boston College, Boston University, Centre College, Gonzaga University, Johns Hopkins University, Kennesaw State University, Loyola University Chicago, Macalester College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, Occidental College, Pepperdine University, Princeton University, Rice University, University of Arkansas, University of Florida, University of North Florida, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of the South (Sewanee), University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University, Wake Forest University and West Virginia University. Each of these colleges superscores, so sending every score lets them build your best combination. A low score from one date does not lower your result.

Explicitly allow Score Choice: Amherst College, Boston University, Claremont McKenna College, Columbia University, Connecticut College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Harvey Mudd College, Northwestern University, Princeton University, Swarthmore College, Tufts University, University of Michigan and University of Pennsylvania. Everywhere else in the table, the college does not publish an all-scores rule, which means you can choose which dates to send.

How superscoring and Score Choice affect your application

At superscoring colleges, every extra sitting can only help. Your best Math and your best Reading and Writing are combined no matter when you earned them, so a student who raises Math on the second test and Reading and Writing on the third presents a stronger total than any single day. That is why most selective colleges, including those that just reinstated testing, tell applicants to send everything.

At single-sitting colleges, plan for one strong day. Georgetown, UT Austin, Texas A&M, Penn State, Michigan State, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, New Mexico and UAB use the best total from one date. For these schools, prepare both sections together and treat every test date as a full attempt.

Test optional colleges still read scores closely when you send them. Many of them superscore, and several use scores for merit scholarships, honors programs or course placement even when admission is test optional. Examples include Miami University’s Presidential Fellows, Tulane’s merit awards, Penn State’s accelerated premed program and Pitt’s guaranteed admission programs for medicine and dental medicine.

Some public universities use scores as minimums or guarantees. Florida and Georgia public universities require scores with published section minimums, the UNC System requires scores below a 2.8 weighted GPA, and Kansas, Iowa State, Houston and Nebraska use scores as one route to assured admission. Check the details for each school below.

Do not self-calculate a superscore unless asked. MIT, Tulane, Mount Holyoke and Binghamton tell applicants to report each sitting as it happened and let the college combine them. Yale and Cornell accept the ACT superscore that ACT itself provides.

A retake strategy built around superscoring

Because most colleges superscore, ConnectPrep plans for two or three official tests and targets sections, not totals. We simplify and deconstruct each section so a student can raise one score at a time:

  1. First sitting: a full attempt after core prep, usually the spring of junior year, to set a baseline on both sections.
  2. Second sitting: focused prep on the weaker section while maintaining the stronger one. At superscoring colleges, only the higher section counts.
  3. Third sitting, if needed: by October of senior year for early applications. Check your list for single-sitting colleges first, since for those the whole test still matters.

See the remaining dates in our SAT and ACT test dates calendar, map the timeline in our SAT prep planner, decide between the tests with our SAT vs ACT comparison, and check whether your colleges want ACT Science in our ACT Science requirements list.

Required SAT superscore: Yes ACT superscore: Yes Score Choice: No rule stated

How scores are used: Yale considers standardized tests as one component of its holistic evaluation process and has no preference between the ACT and SAT.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean when a college superscores?

Superscoring means the college combines your highest section scores from different test dates into one new score. On the SAT that is your best Reading and Writing plus your best Math. On the ACT it is a new composite built from your best English, Math and Reading. 135 of the 196 colleges in our list that use scores superscore the SAT and 128 superscore the ACT.

Which colleges do not superscore the SAT?

Based on their own admissions pages, Georgetown University, Michigan State University, Pennsylvania State University, Texas A&M University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Iowa, University of New Mexico, University of Texas at Austin and University of Wisconsin-Madison use a single sitting instead of superscoring the SAT for fall 2027 applicants.

Which colleges do not superscore the ACT?

Carnegie Mellon University, Colorado College, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Howard University, Michigan State University, Northwestern University, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Swarthmore College, Texas A&M University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Delaware, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Iowa, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, University of New Mexico, University of Texas at Austin, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Worcester Polytechnic Institute do not superscore the ACT. Several of them, including Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, Swarthmore, RPI, Delaware, Colorado College and WPI, do superscore the SAT.

Does Harvard superscore the SAT and ACT?

Harvard says it does not create superscores, but it evaluates your highest SAT section scores across test dates and the strongest single ACT sitting. Harvard allows College Board Score Choice and the ACT equivalent.

Does Georgetown require all SAT scores?

No. Georgetown requires at least one full SAT or ACT, does not accept superscores, and only needs scores from one full exam. It considers only the Reading and Writing and Math portions of the SAT.

Which colleges require you to send all of your SAT and ACT scores?

Only Denison University, Florida Gulf Coast University and Syracuse University require all scores in our list. Syracuse says applicants using SAT Score Choice should be aware that all scores will be required. Another 25 colleges, including MIT, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Vanderbilt and UVA, recommend sending all scores and then superscore them.

Can I use Score Choice for Ivy League schools?

Yes. Harvard, Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Cornell and Dartmouth explicitly allow SAT Score Choice, and Brown and Yale publish no all-scores requirement. Princeton encourages applicants to submit all scores, and Penn encourages the full testing history even though Score Choice is permitted.

Do colleges combine SAT and ACT scores into one superscore?

Almost never. Harvey Mudd is the only college we found that combines its highest section scores across the SAT and ACT. Santa Clara says sending multiple tests lets it see subsections regardless of test type. Every other college superscores each test separately or uses whichever test is higher.

Can I self-report my SAT or ACT scores?

127 colleges in our list accept self-reported scores and ask for official reports only if you enroll. 26 require official scores sent directly from the College Board or ACT, including USC, Princeton, Texas A&M, UT Austin, Georgia, Maryland, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

Should I retake the SAT or ACT if my colleges superscore?

Usually yes, if you have time to prepare. At a superscoring college a retake can only raise your combined score, so many students plan two or three sittings and focus each one on their weaker section. Check your list for single-sitting colleges such as Georgetown, UT Austin and Wisconsin, where the whole test on one date still matters.

Methodology and sources

Between October 16 and 17, 2026, we checked each college’s official undergraduate admissions pages, testing policy pages, FAQs and, for public systems, governing board rules (University of California, California State University, UNC System, University System of Georgia and Florida Board of Governors). We recorded a policy only when the college states it. When a page is silent, the table says "Not stated" or "No rule stated" rather than guessing. We did not rely on third party lists, because many still repeat rules from before the digital SAT and the enhanced ACT. Policies change, so confirm details with each college before you apply. Every college’s source is linked in the table and in its details entry.
