Is there an official JD-Next practice test?
No. Aspen Publishing does not release a public, full length JD-Next practice exam. Enrolled students see sample questions and a mid-course performance report inside the course itself, but there is no downloadable official practice test, and no retired forms have been published.
That gap is why searches for a JD-Next practice test mostly return LSAT questions relabeled, or flashcard decks scraped from someone’s course notes. Neither prepares you for what the exam actually does, which is test whether you can read a judicial opinion the way a first year law student reads one and apply a rule to facts you have never seen.

What the JD-Next Exam Actually Tests
The JD-Next exam is a four hour online assessment of 100 multiple choice questions, split into a 40 question section and a 60 question section with a mandatory 10 minute break between them. A separate 45 minute essay, 15 minutes to plan and 30 to write, is sent to law schools but does not affect your scaled score.
The content is contract law doctrine and legal analysis, taught during the eight week course and then tested. That is a fundamental difference from the LSAT. The LSAT tests reasoning ability on subject matter you do not need to know in advance. JD-Next tests whether you learned the law it just taught you and can apply it. Preparation is therefore about mastery of specific doctrine, not about drilling generic logic games.
In practice the exam rewards four skills: identifying which facts in a problem are dispositive, stating a rule precisely rather than approximately, applying that rule to facts that do not match the textbook example, and reading a judicial opinion for its holding rather than its narrative.
How JD-Next Is Scored
JD-Next scores run from 400 to 1,000 in 10 point increments, with a percentile rank from 1 to 99. Scores typically arrive about three weeks after the exam, and participating law schools receive your report within days of submission.

A 25 question sample cannot predict a scaled score, and any site claiming otherwise is guessing. What a sample like this one does tell you is whether the reasoning feels familiar or foreign, which is the most useful thing to learn before the course starts.
Is the JD-Next exam hard?
It is hard in a different way than the LSAT is hard. The reasoning is more concrete and the material is taught to you first, but you are held to law school standards of precision on doctrine you learned eight weeks ago.
Students who struggle usually do so for one of two reasons. Either they treated the course as passive video watching rather than active practice, which leaves them recognizing terms without being able to apply them. Or they read fast, which works on tests of comprehension and fails on a test where a single word in a fact pattern flips the answer. The counteroffer question above, where an acceptance follows a rejection, is exactly that kind of trap.
How to Prepare for the JD-Next Exam
- Start before week one.The course moves quickly and its early weeks lay the doctrine everything else builds on. Arriving already comfortable with offer, acceptance, and consideration means the eight weeks are spent on depth rather than catching up.
- Brief cases in writing, not in your head.The exam asks you to identify holdings, dispositive facts, and procedural posture. Those are habits built by writing them out, not by reading and nodding.
- Practice under time from the start.Ninety seconds per question is not generous once fact patterns run long. Untimed accuracy is a comfortable illusion.
- Review the questions you got right.On a doctrine test, a right answer for the wrong reason will fail the next time the same rule appears in different facts. This is the step most students skip and the one that moves scores most.
- Take a full length practice exam before test day.Four hours of sustained legal reading is a stamina problem as much as a knowledge problem, and the only way to find out how you hold up is to do it once in advance.

Which law schools accept JD-Next?

How long should I prepare for JD-Next?
The course itself is eight weeks at roughly an hour a day. Students who do best treat that as the middle of the process rather than the whole of it: a few weeks of doctrine work before it starts, and dedicated exam practice in the weeks after the course content ends.
Does the JD-Next writing sample matter?
It does not affect your scaled score, but it is sent to law schools, which means admissions readers see it. Treat it as a writing sample they will actually read, because they will. A disorganized essay attached to a strong score is a preventable problem.
