In short: ConnectPrep provides one-on-one SAT and ACT prep, K-12 tutoring, AP support, private school admissions and college admissions counseling to families in all 50 states through live online sessions, with in-person availability across the New York tri-state area, the Philadelphia Main Line, the Washington DC metro area and the Chicago North Shore, with in-person sessions elsewhere depending on instructor availability. Start with a free consultation at (914) 288-5718.

The single biggest variable across states is what your student gets for free. Illinois and North Carolina give every junior a real ACT on a school day. Connecticut and Michigan give the SAT. Florida requires districts to give one of the three. Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Washington and California give nothing at all, so the family sets the calendar. That one difference changes when prep should start, what the first real score means, and whether a retake is the obvious next move. It is the first thing we work out with a new family.

Score Context

What SAT Score Do All 50 States Students Actually Need?

There is no single national answer, which is exactly why the state pages exist. A 1200 unlocks full tuition in Georgia and is below the flagship range in Virginia. A 1330 is a full Bright Futures award in Florida and roughly a hundred points short of the University of Florida’s admitted middle 50%. And in California and Washington the public flagships do not use scores at all. Here is the national picture, with the state-specific version on each state page:

Score Range Context Typical Target Schools
1500+ 99th percentile nationally Ivy League, Stanford, MIT and peer universities
1400 to 1490 Strong at most flagship publics and competitive privates Top-25 universities, honors colleges, significant merit aid
1300 to 1390 Solid national range Top-50 universities, strong merit candidates at many publics
1200 to 1290 Around or above several state scholarship cutoffs Regional publics, state merit awards, broad match range
Below 1200 Below most flagship ranges Significant upside from prep, and test-optional worth considering

How It Works

How ConnectPrep Programs Run for All 50 States Families

Online programs run the same way everywhere, and the plan is built around your state’s testing calendar rather than a generic one. Planning a testing calendar? See every 2026-27 SAT and ACT test date and deadline in one place.

  • Live online: 1:1 Zoom sessions with a shared digital whiteboard, so the tutor and student work the same problem at the same time. One consistent senior tutor, never a rotating pool
  • A diagnostic first: Every program starts with a full Bluebook diagnostic or a timed ACT to locate a true baseline, then builds backward from the college list and deadlines
  • Built around your state: We check whether your state or district gives a free school-day SAT or ACT, when that window falls, and what scholarship thresholds apply, before setting a single test date
  • Practice testing: Full-length, timed practice tests reviewed question by question, with a written parent recap after every session and the plan updated every two weeks
  • In person where we have hubs: Families in the New York tri-state area, on the Philadelphia Main Line, in the DC metro area or on the Chicago North Shore can work in person with the same tutors

Fast Facts

SAT Benchmarks by State

National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs are set separately for every state and vary by roughly 15 Selection Index points from the lowest to the highest, so the same PSAT score qualifies in one state and misses in another. Statewide averages must be read alongside participation: a state that tests nearly every graduate posts a far lower mean than one where only college-bound students sit the exam. Cutoffs below are the class of 2027, announced in September 2026. Averages are the class of 2025. Last reviewed September 2026.

State National Merit cutoff (Selection Index) Average score (participation) Free school-day SAT or ACT
Arizona 215 1194 (10%) Yes
California 220 1096 (26%) No
Colorado 217 987 (90%) Yes
Connecticut 220 989 (91%) Yes
Florida 216 970 (87%) Yes
Georgia 217 1038 (56%) No
Illinois 218 961 (99%) Yes
Massachusetts 221 1114 (57%) No
Michigan 216 953 (100%) Yes
Minnesota 214 ACT about 20.7 (about 70%) No
New Jersey 223 1061 (66%) No
New York 220 1045 (62%) Varies
North Carolina 217 ACT 18.2 (about 100% of 11th graders) Yes
Ohio 216 1018 (20%) Varies
Oregon 216 1127 (24%) No
Pennsylvania 219 1084 (47%) No
Tennessee 214 ACT 19.3 (99%) Yes
Texas 219 964 (74%) Varies
Virginia 221 1112 (48%) Varies
Washington 221 1095 (35%) No

New Jersey has the highest cutoff of these twenty at 223, tied with Washington, DC for the highest in the country. Minnesota and Tennessee are the lowest of these twenty at 214. Every state fell from the class of 2026. See every state in our National Merit cutoffs table.

All 50 States Tutoring & Admissions FAQs

Is online tutoring as effective as in person?

In our experience yes, and for many students better. Sessions run on Zoom with a shared digital whiteboard, so the tutor and student write on the same problem simultaneously, and the student can review the annotated work afterward. Online also removes travel time, which usually means more consistent scheduling and fewer cancelled sessions.

Which states do you work in?

All 50. We have dedicated pages for twenty states plus our in-person metro hubs, and we work with families everywhere else through the same online program, with in-person sessions depending on instructor availability. If your state does not have its own page yet, get in touch and we will put together a plan.

Do you offer in-person tutoring anywhere?

Yes, in our home markets and three dedicated hubs: Fairfield County Connecticut, New York City, Westchester, Northern New Jersey, the Philadelphia Main Line, the Washington DC metro area and the Chicago North Shore, with in-person sessions elsewhere depending on instructor availability. Every one of those has its own page with local detail.

Does my state give a free SAT or ACT at school?

It depends, and it matters more than most families realize. Illinois and North Carolina administer the ACT to every junior. Connecticut and Michigan administer the SAT. Florida requires districts to give the SAT, ACT or CLT to all eleventh graders. Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington and California have no statewide program. Each state page covers the current rules.

What score gains do students typically see?

Students average a 250 point SAT gain and 5 to 7 point ACT gains. We set the target from the diagnostic and the college list rather than from a generic promise.

How do you handle time zones?

Routinely. We schedule around the student’s local time, and our tutors work across US time zones as well as with international families. Consistency of tutor matters more than convenience of hour, so we match first and schedule second.

When should a student start?

Most students start in the spring of sophomore year or the summer before junior year, which leaves room for a diagnostic, a full prep cycle, and two or three real test dates before applications. Students in states with a school-day test should start earlier so that free administration lands after preparation, not before it.

Do you work with students with ADHD, IEPs, or 504 plans?

Yes. Our instructors are trained in ADHD, CAPD, dyslexia and executive function support, and we handle College Board and ACT accommodations requests for you, including extended time, breaks and separate settings. We also coordinate with a school’s existing IEP or 504 team so the prep plan matches the supports already in place.

Which states have the highest National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs?

For the class of 2027, announced in September 2026, New Jersey has the highest at a 223 Selection Index, tied with Washington, DC and US students abroad, followed by Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington at 221, and California, Connecticut and New York at 220. Minnesota and Tennessee were the lowest of the twenty states we cover at 214. The Selection Index runs from 48 to 228 and is calculated from the PSAT/NMSQT taken in October of junior year. Because cutoffs are set per state against a fixed national number of Semifinalists, the same score qualifies comfortably in one state and misses in another, which is why a family relocating between junior and senior year can see their odds change without their score moving.

Why do state average SAT scores vary so much?

Almost entirely because of participation, not student ability. Michigan averaged 953 with 100% of graduates tested and Minnesota averaged 1210 with 3% tested. Michigan does not have weaker students; it tests everyone, including students with no college plans, while Minnesota is reporting a small, self-selected, college-bound group. Any comparison of raw state averages that ignores participation is misleading. Illinois at 961 with 99% participation and Colorado at 987 with 90% are the same phenomenon.

Which states give students a free SAT or ACT at school?

Among the states we cover, Illinois, North Carolina and Arizona administer the ACT to all eleventh graders. Connecticut, Colorado and Michigan administer the SAT. Florida requires every district to give the SAT, ACT or CLT. Tennessee requires one and makes it a graduation requirement. Ohio and Minnesota leave the choice to districts, and Minnesota funds it only for students eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Texas funds one attempt through HB 3. Virginia divisions must offer a school-day SAT from 2026-27 under HB 410. Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington and California have no statewide program.

Does my student need the SAT if our state universities are test-optional?

It depends on the whole list, not the flagship. The University of California is test-free and will not look at a score even if you send one, and Washington State is test-blind. UNC requires a score only from applicants below a 2.8 GPA. But UT Austin and UT Knoxville have both reinstated requirements, the University System of Georgia restored testing at seven institutions for Fall 2026, and Yale requires testing in some form. Selective private universities and out-of-state publics are where scores still carry the most weight, and merit aid at national universities frequently turns on one. We plan submission school by school rather than as a single decision.
