Every independent school sets its own testing rules, deadlines and interview process, and they change each year. This table pulls them together for the schools families in our area apply to most, from Greenwich and Fairfield County day schools to Westchester, the Bronx, Northern New Jersey and the major Connecticut and New Jersey boarding schools.

Coming up: TACHS for Archdiocese of New York high schools is November 6, 2026 (register by October 28). The HSPT for Fairfield Prep, Notre Dame Prep and St. Joseph is October 24 or November 7, 2026. Horace Mann interviews should be booked by October 15, and the earliest deadlines are Pingry Early Action (November 9), Fieldston (November 13) and Horace Mann (November 18).

Do Connecticut, New York and New Jersey private schools want the SSAT or the ISEE?

Most day schools in Fairfield County, Greenwich, Westchester and Northern New Jersey accept either test with no preference. Exceptions: Horace Mann treats the ISEE as its primary test and accepts the SSAT only from students also applying to boarding schools, Brunswick requires the ISEE for grades 2 to 6, and Greenwich Academy, Rye Country Day and Brunswick use the ISEE Primary for younger grades.

Which boarding schools are test optional for fall 2027?

In Connecticut, Choate, Loomis Chaffee, Kent, Suffield, Miss Porter’s, Cheshire, Salisbury, Frederick Gunn and Marvelwood are test optional, and Westover and Westminster accept a graded writing sample instead of scores. Hotchkiss and Taft require the SSAT or ISEE for grades 9 and 10, as do Lawrenceville and Peddie in New Jersey. Blair prefers but does not require scores, and Hun is test flexible.

What test do Catholic high schools in the area use?

Archdiocese of New York high schools such as Stepinac use the TACHS, given November 6, 2026, with registration closing October 28, 2026. Diocese of Bridgeport schools (Fairfield Prep, Notre Dame Prep and St. Joseph) use the HSPT on October 24 or November 7, 2026. Bergen Catholic uses the HSPT, while Seton Hall Prep and Delbarton give their own exams.

When are private school applications due for fall 2027?

Most day schools set deadlines between December 1, 2026 and January 15, 2027, and most boarding schools use January 15. The earliest are Pingry Early Action (November 9), Fieldston (November 13) and Horace Mann (November 18), and Horace Mann asks families to book interviews by October 15.

Do Rye Country Day and Hackley require the SSAT or ISEE?

Yes. Rye Country Day requires the ISEE or SSAT for grades 5 to 12 with no preference, with testing done by January 10. Hackley requires the ISEE or SSAT for grades 5 to 11. Both require an interview.

Which schools accept the Character Skills Snapshot?

Only Hotchkiss, Taft, Hamden Hall (grades 7 to 12) and Peddie mention the Snapshot on their official pages, and all four treat it as optional.
