Colleges That Accept the CLT: The Complete 2026-27 List
Every college, university and program that takes Classic Learning Test scores, sorted by state, plus the public university systems, service academies and state scholarships that now recognize the CLT.
The short answer
As of November 2026, the CLT’s own directory lists 405 colleges and programs that accept CLT scores, and state policies cover 19 more public campuses, for 424 on this page. Four public systems accept the CLT by policy or law: Florida’s 12 state universities, the University System of Georgia (every campus except UGA and Georgia Tech, from Fall 2027), the UNC System (for applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.80 or higher) and Indiana’s public universities (by state law since July 1, 2026). West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy accept it too. None of the Ivy League schools are on the list, so most students aiming at highly selective colleges should still plan on the SAT or ACT. New to the test? Start with our CLT guide.

What is the CLT?
Quick answer
The Classic Learning Test is a two hour college entrance exam with three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Grammar and Writing, and Quantitative Reasoning. Each section is scored out of 40, for a total of up to 120. Students can take it at home with remote proctoring or at a participating school, there is no calculator and no guessing penalty, and scores come back in about three weeks.
This page focuses on where the CLT is accepted. For the format, score conversions to the SAT and ACT, what counts as a good score and the full 2026-27 test calendar, see our complete guide to the Classic Learning Test.
Public university systems that accept the CLT
Quick answer
Four public systems accept the CLT by board policy or state law: the Florida State University System, the University System of Georgia, the University of North Carolina System and Indiana’s public universities. In Arkansas, 25 public campuses accept it individually. Texas now lets its public universities consider it, with formal rules due for fall 2028 admissions.
| System | What the policy says | Applies from |
|---|---|---|
| Florida State University System (12 universities) | Board of Governors Regulation 6.002 lists the CLT as an accepted admissions test, alongside the SAT and ACT | 2023 |
| University System of Georgia | Board of Regents Policy 4.2.1: CLT scores may be substituted for SAT scores using the CLT to SAT concordance. Applies to every campus except the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech, which still use only the SAT or ACT | Fall 2027 admissions |
| University of North Carolina System | At campuses that accept test scores from applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.80 or higher, students may submit the ACT, SAT or CLT. Applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.50 to 2.79 must still submit the ACT or SAT | Current UNC policy |
| Indiana public universities | Senate Enrolled Act 88 (2026) requires state educational institutions to accept the CLT to the same extent they accept the ACT or SAT. It also lets the CLT serve as the statewide high school assessment | July 1, 2026 |
| Arkansas | No system wide rule, but 25 public campuses, including the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State, are on the CLT’s list. Act 724 of 2025 requires public and charter high schools to offer the CLT | Varies by campus |
| Texas | The Coordinating Board found the CLT as rigorous and reliable as the SAT and ACT and told public universities they may consider it now for applicants who are not automatically admitted | Rules for fall 2028 admissions |
Sources: Florida Board of Governors; University System of Georgia Board of Regents Policy 4.2.1; UNC System admissions requirements; Indiana Senate Enrolled Act 88; Arkansas Act 724 of 2025; Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board letter of July 23, 2026.
Iowa and Oklahoma are often described as CLT states too. All three Iowa Regent universities and the University of Oklahoma are on the CLT’s list, but we could not confirm a system wide policy from either state’s board, so we treat them as individual campus decisions.
What changed in Texas
Quick answer
Texas public universities may now consider CLT scores, but this is permission, not a requirement. On July 22, 2026 the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board accepted a study finding the CLT, SAT and ACT of sufficient rigor and reliability, and the next day the commissioner told institutions they may consider CLT scores for applicants who are not automatically admitted, international applicants and returning students.
You may have read that every Texas public university began accepting the CLT on August 1, 2026. That date comes from the CLT’s own announcement, not from the state. The Coordinating Board’s letter sets no start date, and formal Uniform Admission Policy rules are due to the board by January 2027 to apply to fall 2028 admissions. Only two Texas public universities, Tarleton State and West Texas A&M, appear on the CLT’s own college list so far. If a Texas public university is on your list, ask its admissions office directly whether it will use a CLT score for your application year.
Service academies and ROTC
Quick answer
West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy accept the CLT. The Naval Academy and Air Force Academy began with the 2027 admissions cycle. The Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy do not, as of November 2026.
| Academy | Accepts the CLT? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Military Academy (West Point) | Yes | West Point’s testing page lists the SAT, ACT or CLT; official scores are due by January 31 of senior year |
| U.S. Naval Academy | Yes | Accepted beginning with the 2027 admissions cycle, per the CLT’s service academy announcement |
| U.S. Air Force Academy | Yes | Accepted beginning with the 2027 admissions cycle, per the CLT’s service academy announcement |
| U.S. Coast Guard Academy | No | Included only in proposed federal legislation |
| U.S. Merchant Marine Academy | No | Included only in proposed federal legislation |
Sources: West Point admissions testing page; CLT service academies page; House and Senate Armed Services Committee FY2027 NDAA amendments. A Senate committee amendment requiring the academies to accept the CLT was adopted in June 2026, but final passage was not confirmed as of this update.
The CLT says ROTC scholarship programs in every branch accept CLT scores. Because ROTC scholarship rules are set by each service, confirm with the branch before relying on a CLT score alone. For academy candidates, the strongest approach is usually to submit whichever test shows your student best, since academies weigh test scores alongside the nomination, fitness assessment and medical review.
State scholarships that count the CLT
Quick answer
Florida’s Bright Futures, Louisiana’s TOPS and the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship all accept CLT scores, and Oklahoma added the CLT to its Promise and Rising Scholars programs in 2025. Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship does not: its test score route still lists only the SAT and ACT.
| State | Program | How the CLT counts |
|---|---|---|
| Florida | Bright Futures (Academic and Medallion Scholars) | CLT accepted with concordant scores, and CLT superscoring is allowed. The most recent published handbook lists a CLT 96 for Florida Academic Scholars. Thresholds are rising for the class of 2028, so confirm current minimums with Florida’s Office of Student Financial Assistance |
| Louisiana | TOPS | Since the class of 2025. Minimum CLT scores: Tech 54, Opportunity 66, Performance 80, Honors 91, Excellence 101 |
| Arkansas | Academic Challenge Scholarship | Qualifying CLT score of 58. High schools must offer the CLT under Act 724 of 2025 |
| Oklahoma | Oklahoma’s Promise and Oklahoma Rising Scholars | HB 1096 (2025) added the CLT as an option, including as an ACT alternative for homeschool students in Oklahoma’s Promise |
| Indiana | Statewide high school assessment | SEA 88 lets a college entrance exam such as the CLT serve as the statewide high school assessment |
| Georgia | HOPE Scholarship | Not accepted: the test score route lists only the ACT (24) and SAT (1160) |
Sources: Florida HB 1537 (2023) staff analysis and Bright Futures handbook; Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance; Arkansas Act 724 of 2025 and Division of Higher Education; Oklahoma HB 1096 (2025); Indiana SEA 88; Georgia Student Finance Commission. Pending, not law: Ohio HB 326 passed the Ohio House in February 2026 and awaits the Senate; a Tennessee bill died in committee in March 2026.
CLT acceptance by the numbers
Quick answer
Of the 424 schools on this list, 298 are private and 126 are public, including the three service academies. Florida has the most, with 55, followed by Arkansas (33), Georgia (31), North Carolina (30) and Indiana (28). Seven states have no college on the list yet, and 67 colleges tie merit scholarships directly to CLT scores.
| State | Colleges that accept the CLT | Public | Private |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florida | 55 | 30 | 25 |
| Arkansas | 33 | 25 | 8 |
| Georgia | 31 | 23 | 8 |
| North Carolina | 30 | 16 | 14 |
| Indiana | 28 | 17 | 11 |
| Texas | 25 | 2 | 23 |
| California | 15 | 0 | 15 |
| Ohio | 14 | 0 | 14 |
| Tennessee | 14 | 0 | 14 |
| Virginia | 14 | 3 | 11 |
Source: ConnectPrep analysis of the CLT college directory plus Georgia, North Carolina and Indiana system policies, November 6, 2026. Counts include programs and campuses listed separately. States with no CLT college on the list: Delaware, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Vermont.
The pattern is clear: CLT acceptance is strongest where state policy pushes it. Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Indiana, the five states where state policy promotes the CLT, account for 177 of the 424 schools, and outside those states the CLT is accepted mostly by private, often faith based or classical liberal arts colleges.
The complete list of colleges that accept the CLT, by state
Quick answer
The 424 schools below combine the 405 colleges and programs on the CLT’s official directory with 19 public campuses covered by the Georgia, North Carolina and Indiana policies that the directory does not yet list. Jump to a state, then confirm testing rules with each college for your application year.
How to read the notes: CLT merit scholarships means the college ties merit aid to CLT scores on the CLT’s scholarship page. Policy badges show which state or system rule applies. Not on CLT list; covered by policy marks campuses we added because a system policy or state law covers them. Program level listings accept the CLT for a specific program, not for general admission.

2026-27 CLT test dates
Quick answer
Registration for the November 14, 2026 remote CLT closed on November 5, so the next remote date open for registration is Tuesday, December 8, 2026, with a December 3 deadline. Remote dates then run almost every month through June 17, 2027.
See every remote and in-school date, registration deadline and score release date in our 2026-27 CLT test dates and scores guide.
Should your student take the CLT?
Quick answer
Take the CLT if several colleges on your student’s list accept it, if you are chasing Florida Bright Futures, Louisiana TOPS or the Arkansas Academic Challenge, or if your student is a strong reader who prefers testing at home. Do not take it instead of the SAT or ACT if the list includes highly selective colleges that do not appear above.
- It works best as an extra data point. Most students who benefit from the CLT also sit for the SAT or ACT and send whichever score is strongest where both are accepted.
- Check concordance before you celebrate. Colleges and the Georgia system convert CLT scores to SAT equivalents, so the comparison that matters is the concorded score, not the raw 120.
- Plan for no calculator. Students coming from the digital SAT’s built in calculator need targeted arithmetic and algebra practice before a CLT.
- Use the dates. With remote tests almost every month, the CLT is easy to fit around fall sports and SAT or ACT dates.
At ConnectPrep we start every testing plan with a free diagnostic so families can see which test plays to a student’s strengths before they spend months preparing. Our approach is to simplify and deconstruct each exam, and the CLT’s reading heavy design rewards that kind of preparation.

How we built and verify this list
ConnectPrep built this list on November 6, 2026 from three kinds of sources. First, every college and program card on the CLT’s official college directory, which says more than 400 schools accept the CLT; we found 405 unique institutions after removing duplicates and a scholarship agency. Second, the written admissions policies of public university systems and state laws, which cover 19 Georgia, North Carolina and Indiana campuses the directory does not yet list; those rows are marked so you can tell them apart. Third, primary sources for every policy claim: board regulations, enacted bills, state scholarship agencies and the service academies’ own admissions pages.
Where sources disagreed, we said so rather than picking the more impressive number. The CLT’s own pages variously say more than 350, more than 360 and more than 400 partner colleges, and the University System of Georgia covers 23 campuses rather than the 24 sometimes reported. Testing policies change every admissions cycle, so we recheck this page regularly and show the date of the last check at the top and bottom.
CLT FAQ
How many colleges accept the CLT?
The CLT’s own directory lists 405 colleges and programs as of November 2026. Adding 19 public campuses covered by Georgia, North Carolina and Indiana policies that the directory does not yet list brings the total on this page to 424.
Does the University of Florida accept the CLT?
Yes. The University of Florida and the other 11 universities in the Florida State University System accept the CLT under Board of Governors Regulation 6.002, and CLT scores also count for Bright Futures.
Do Ivy League schools accept the CLT?
No Ivy League university appears on the CLT’s directory as of November 2026. Students applying to the Ivies and other highly selective colleges should plan on the SAT or ACT.
Does UT Austin accept the CLT?
UT Austin is not on the CLT’s directory. Texas now lets public universities consider CLT scores for applicants who are not automatically admitted, with formal rules due for fall 2028 admissions, so ask UT Austin admissions directly for your application year.
Do the military service academies accept the CLT?
West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy accept the CLT. The Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy do not, as of November 2026.
Does the University of Georgia accept the CLT?
No. The University System of Georgia accepts CLT scores at its other campuses from Fall 2027, but the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech still use only the SAT or ACT.
How is the CLT scored?
The CLT has three sections, Verbal Reasoning, Grammar and Writing, and Quantitative Reasoning, each scored out of 40, for a total of up to 120. There is no penalty for guessing.
Can I take the CLT at home?
Yes. The remote CLT is taken on your own laptop or desktop with live remote proctoring and a lockdown browser. Tablets and phones are not supported.
Which state has the most colleges that accept the CLT?
Florida, with 55 colleges and programs, including all 12 public universities in the Florida State University System. Arkansas (33), Georgia (31), North Carolina (30) and Indiana (28) follow.
Do any colleges in Connecticut, New York or New Jersey accept the CLT?
A few. In Connecticut, Holy Apostles College accepts it. In New York, Houghton University, Keuka College, Roberts Wesleyan College and West Point accept it. No New Jersey college is on the CLT’s directory as of November 2026.
Is the CLT accepted by public universities?
Yes. The list includes 126 public institutions and programs, among them Florida’s 12 state universities, 23 University System of Georgia campuses from Fall 2027, UNC System campuses for applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.80 or higher, and Indiana’s public universities under state law.
