No. The UC is test-free, which is stronger than test-optional: scores are not considered in admission even if you send them. The CSU system permanently removed the SAT and ACT from admissions by trustee vote in 2022. That covers every UC campus plus Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Diego State and the rest of the CSU.

A student from Gunn, Troy, Harker or Torrey Pines aiming at top-25 privates realistically needs 1520 or above. A student applying only to UCs and CSUs has no testing reason to prep, and we will tell you that plainly.

Grade 11 students take Smarter Balanced in ELA and math, and there is no state-funded SAT or ACT school day, so admissions testing is entirely a family decision.

The a-g course requirements and the capped weighted GPA. Because the UC ignores scores, the differentiation happens in course sequencing, how many UC-approved honors courses a student takes, and the personal insight questions. We advise on all three, and for many families that is a better use of the hours than a test the UC will not read.

Oxford Academy in Cypress and Whitney High School in Cerritos both admit by entrance exam, generally into seventh grade, and CAMS in Long Beach admits by application. That creates a sixth and seventh grade admissions cycle that runs years before anyone opens a college list. We prepare students for those exams and for the independent school SSAT and ISEE process.

If the list needs a score, most of our California students start in the spring of sophomore year or the summer before junior year. Because there is no free school-day test to anchor to, the calendar is entirely ours to set, which is an advantage. Students at Harvard-Westlake, Menlo, Harker or Castilleja often start earlier because those schools run a compressed junior year.

Our instructors are trained in ADHD, CAPD, dyslexia and executive function support, and we handle College Board and ACT accommodations requests for you, including extended time, breaks and separate settings. We also coordinate with a school’s existing IEP or 504 team so the prep plan matches the supports already in place.

For the class of 2026, the most recent year with officially confirmed cutoffs, California required a Selection Index of 224. The Selection Index runs from 48 to 228 and is calculated from the PSAT/NMSQT taken in October of junior year, doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math section scores. Cutoffs are set separately for every state and shift by a point or two each year, so treat 224 as a planning benchmark rather than a guarantee. Cutoffs for the class of 2027 are announced each September.

The California average was 1096 for the class of 2025, with 26% of graduates tested. The participation rate matters more than the number. A state that tests nearly every graduate posts a much lower average than a state where only college-bound students sit the exam, so comparing raw state averages without participation is misleading. For students in the competitive districts we work with, the relevant benchmark is the admitted range at their target colleges, not the state mean.

Because the UC and CSU ignore scores entirely, testing here is bought purely for private and out-of-state applications. That means the only sensible starting point is the college list. If it needs a score, we diagnose both tests and set a calendar from scratch, since nothing is imposed on you. The two tests are scored differently but weighted equally by colleges, and every US college that accepts one accepts the other.
