What Is the Smarter Balanced Assessment?
SBAC — the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium test — is the standardized assessment given to students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 across more than a dozen U.S. states and territories. It measures performance against Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Math.
Unlike traditional fill-in-the-bubble tests, SBAC is computer-adaptive — questions get harder or easier based on your student's responses. It also includes a Performance Task in each subject, requiring extended written analysis or multi-step problem-solving — not just multiple choice.
SBAC scores increasingly factor into school placement, gifted program eligibility, and 11th-grade college readiness assessments. Strong SBAC performance signals academic readiness — and underperformance can have real consequences for tracking, enrichment opportunities, and confidence.
English Language Arts. Reading comprehension, listening, research/inquiry, and writing. Includes both adaptive multiple-choice and constructed-response items.
