What Is the Smarter Balanced Assessment?

SBAC, the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium test, is the standardized assessment given to students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 across more than a dozen U.S. states and territories. It measures performance against Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Math.

Unlike traditional fill-in-the-bubble tests, SBAC is computer-adaptivequestions get harder or easier based on your student's responses. It also includes a Performance Task in each subject, requiring extended written analysis or multi-step problem-solving, not just multiple choice.

SBAC scores increasingly factor into school placement, gifted program eligibility, and 11th-grade college readiness assessments. Strong SBAC performance signals academic readinessand underperformance can have real consequences for tracking, enrichment opportunities, and confidence.

Three Components of the SBAC

ELA

English Language Arts. Reading comprehension, listening, research/inquiry, and writing. Includes both adaptive multiple-choice and constructed-response items.

Math

Mathematics. Concepts & procedures, problem solving & data analysis, communicating reasoning. Computer-adaptive across all grades.

Students with significant skill gaps benefit from starting earlier, sometimes 4-6 months out, especially in 5th, 8th, and 11th grades where stakes are higher. The SBAC consortium uses the same test framework across member states (CA, WA, OR, CT, NH, VT, ND, SD, HI, ID, MT, plus territories), so the underlying test is identical. However, individual states may use different cut scores, branding (e.g., "Smarter Balanced," "CAASPP" in CA), and have slightly different testing windows. Our tutors know each state's specifics.

SBAC is computer-adaptive (questions get harder or easier based on student responses), aligned to Common Core, and includes substantial Performance Task components requiring extended writing or multi-step problem solving. This makes it more rigorous than fill-in-the-bubble tests and rewards different prep strategies. We tailor the approach accordingly.

Yes, increasingly so. SBAC scores can affect honors and gifted program placement, summer enrichment opportunities, accelerated math and ELA tracks in middle school, and (in CA and other states) college course placement at CSU/UC for 11th-grade testers via the EAP designation. Strong SBAC performance opens academic doors.

Both work, and online may actually be better for SBAC specifically because the test itself is computer-based. Practicing online with a tutor builds the same screen-based skills students need on test day. Most ConnectPrep SBAC students work entirely online via live 1-on-1 sessions.
