Connecticut required a 223 Selection Index for National Merit Semifinalist status in the class of 2026, one of the highest cutoffs in the country. On the PSAT/NMSQT the Selection Index is the Reading and Writing plus Math section scores added and multiplied by two, so 223 corresponds roughly to a 1490 to 1510 PSAT. In Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Westport and Ridgefield schools the practical implication is that sophomore fall, not junior fall, is when the work has to start if National Merit is the goal.

The Connecticut statewide average was 989 for the class of 2025, with 91% of graduates tested. That is a statewide figure covering every district, and it is not the number Fairfield County families should plan around. Building averages in Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Westport and Ridgefield schools run substantially higher, and the colleges these students apply to publish middle 50% ranges of their own. We set targets from the college list, not the state average.

Connecticut gives every junior a school-day SAT in March, so the SAT is the default and the free administration is a real score that arrives before summer. The number to know is 1200, the Roberta B. Willis threshold, which is close enough to the middle of Hartford-area buildings that a retake often pays for itself. We diagnose with a full-length section of each before committing, because the wrong test costs a student a full testing cycle.

A good score is the one that clears the middle 50% of the schools on the student’s list. For context: UConn 1260 to 1420; Yale requires testing and sits at 1480 to 1560.
