AP and IB Course Map 2026-27: Every Class, Difficulty Ratings and How Colleges Award Credit
All 42 AP courses and the most widely offered IB Diploma subjects in one place, with a difficulty rating built from official score data, 2027 exam dates, and real credit policies from ten colleges.
The short answer
There are 42 AP courses in 2026-27, and every 2027 AP Exam is digital, given May 3 to 14, 2027. The IB Diploma is a two-year program of six subjects at Higher or Standard Level plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, scored out of 45. Colleges generally show no preference between AP and IB; they judge rigor against what your school offers. Credit policies vary: many public universities award credit for an AP 3 or an IB HL 5, while selective colleges often require a 5 or HL 7 or give placement only.
How we rate difficulty
Each rating comes straight from official results, not opinion. For AP courses we average the share of students who earned a 5 in 2025 and 2026, as published by College Board: under 12% is Very hard, 12% to 15.9% is Hard, 16% to 19.9% is Moderate, 20% to 29.9% is Moderate to manageable, and 30% or more is Most manageable. For IB subjects we use the mean grade from the IB’s May 2025 statistical bulletin, combining Higher and Standard Level by number of students: 4.2 or below is Very hard, 4.3 to 4.5 Hard, 4.6 to 4.8 Moderate, 4.9 to 5.0 Moderate to manageable, and 5.1 or above Most manageable.
Keep the limits in mind. Scores reflect who takes each exam: heritage speakers lift results in some language courses, and AP Calculus BC draws students who already did well in math. A course with high average scores can still be hard for your student. Two new AP courses have no results yet and are not rated.

The IB core and how the diploma is scored
- Extended Essay. Independent research essay with an upper limit of 4,000 words (the limit includes introduction, body, conclusion and quotations). It is compulsory and externally assessed, graded A to E, and combined with the TOK grade to award up to 3 core points. Students hold three mandatory reflection sessions with a school supervisor, the last being a short viva voce. A revised EE guide (launched February 2025) is first assessed in May 2027 with five criteria: framework for the essay (6 marks), knowledge and understanding (6), analysis and line of argument (6), discussion and evaluation (8), reflection (4).
- Theory of Knowledge. Assessed through two components: a TOK exhibition (three objects with commentaries; internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated; one third of the TOK grade) and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title (externally assessed by IB examiners; two thirds of the grade). Graded A to E.
- CAS. Creativity, activity and service runs throughout the two-year programme. Students take part in experiences across the three strands, complete at least one CAS project, reflect on their experiences, and give evidence of meeting seven learning outcomes. CAS is not graded, but the school must confirm completion or the diploma is not awarded.
- Points. Six subjects are each graded 1 to 7 (maximum 42), and TOK and the EE together add 0 to 3 core points via a matrix, for a maximum of 45. HL and SL subjects carry equal weight. The minimum to earn the diploma is 24 points. Main failing conditions: CAS requirements not met; fewer than 24 points; a grade not awarded in any subject, TOK or EE; a grade 1 in any subject (at least a 2 is required); more than two grade 2s; more than three grades of 3 or below; an E in TOK or the EE; fewer than 12 points on HL subjects (with four HL subjects the top three count); fewer than 9 points on SL subjects (with only two SL subjects, at least 5 points at SL). Students take at least one course from each of groups 1 to 5 (two group 1 courses in different languages can replace group 2).
- 2025 results. In May 2025, 81.9% of diploma candidates passed and the average total was 30.6 points.
- May 2027 session. The IB had not published the official schedule when we checked. School timetables run from late April through May 18, 2027, and May results are released on July 6.
AP vs IB: the key differences
- Score scales differ: AP exams are scored 1 to 5, while each IB subject is graded 1 to 7 and the full IB Diploma is scored out of 45 (24 minimum to pass).
- AP is course by course; the IB Diploma is a two-year package of six subjects across the subject groups plus TOK, the extended essay and CAS. AP's closest equivalent, the AP Capstone Diploma, requires 3 or higher on AP Seminar, AP Research and four other AP Exams.
- IB subjects come in two levels (HL about 240 recommended hours, SL about 150); AP courses have a single level. Many colleges grant credit only for HL: MIT and the University of Michigan list no SL credit, and Stanford states SL exams are not accepted.
- For most AP courses the score comes from one May exam (multiple choice plus free response, graded at the June AP Reading). Most IB courses also include teacher-assessed internal assessment, such as science lab work and math investigations, alongside final exams.
- Exam calendars overlap but differ: 2027 AP Exams run May 3 to May 14, while school-published May 2027 IB timetables run from late April to May 18.
- IB diploma results come out in early July (from 12:00 GMT on 6 July for May sessions), and before release students can request that results be sent to six universities free of charge.
- In the UC GPA calculation for California residents, AP courses, IB HL courses and designated IB SL courses all count as honors-level and earn an extra grade point per semester (capped at 8 points across grades 10 and 11). For nonresidents only AP and IB courses get the extra weight.
- Some systems give credit for the IB Diploma as a whole: UC adds 6 quarter units for a diploma score of 30 or higher, and UT Austin lets IB Diploma holders earn up to 24 hours from qualifying HL and SL scores. AP has no equivalent whole-program award.
What colleges say about AP and IB
- MIT does not require specific advanced courses; it asks students to take the most challenging math and science available at their school and reads applicants in the context of what that school offers, noting that some curricula (it names IB) limit how many sciences a student can take. Source
- UVA says it has no preference among AP, IB, Cambridge or dual enrollment, and encourages students to use whatever advanced courses their school offers. Source
- On the Common App School Report, counselors rate the applicant's course selection against other college prep students at the same school (from 'less than demanding' to 'most demanding') and report how many AP, IB, honors and Cambridge courses the school offers and any per-year caps, so rigor is judged in school context. Source
- The University of California treats AP, IB HL and designated IB SL courses as honors-level in its GPA calculation for California residents, adding one point per semester up to 8 points in grades 10 and 11 (no more than 4 from 10th grade). Source
- In NACAC's State of College Admission report (13th edition, summarized by NACAC in 2022), 79.2% of colleges gave grades in college prep courses 'considerable importance', making it the top-rated admission factor. Source
The takeaway for families: there is no single right program. Colleges want to see that a student took the most demanding courses that fit their strengths at their school, and did well in them.
How colleges award credit: ten real examples
Credit and placement policies change every year and differ by subject. Each college name links to its official policy page. Always confirm with the college before counting on credit.
| College | AP policy example | IB policy example |
|---|---|---|
| MIT | Only a 5 earns credit: a 5 on AP Calculus BC earns credit for 18.01 and 5s on both Physics C exams earn 8.01, but AP Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science earn no credit. | Only HL scores of 7 count: Mathematics HL 7 earns 18.01 and Physics HL 7 earns 8.01, while Biology and Chemistry HL earn no credit. |
| Dartmouth College | A 4 or 5 on AP Calculus BC earns credit on entrance for Math 3 and Math 8 and placement into Math 9 or 11, but credit on entrance does not reduce the 35 credits required to graduate. | Only HL scores of 6 or 7 are evaluated (for example, Chemistry HL 6 or 7 earns credit for Chemistry 5 and placement into Chemistry 11), and this credit also does not count toward the 35 credits for graduation. |
| Yale University | AP scores earn 'acceleration credit' (max two per subject): a 5 on AP Calculus BC earns 2 credits and a 4 earns 1, while AP Chemistry, Computer Science and Economics earn none. | Where Yale requires an AP 5, an IB HL 7 is required, and where an AP 4 or 5 qualifies, an HL 6 or 7 is required; exams must be taken before enrolling. |
| Stanford University | A 5 on AP Calculus BC earns 10 units satisfying MATH 19/20/21 (a 4 earns 6 units), and total test plus transfer credit is capped at 45 quarter units. | HL Mathematics: analysis and approaches 6 or higher earns 6 units (MATH 19/20); IB SL exams are not accepted. |
| University of Michigan | A 5 on AP Calculus BC earns credit for MATH 120 and 121 and a 4 earns MATH 120 only; a 3 or lower earns no math credit. | Math: analysis and approaches HL 7 earns MATH 120 and 121 (after a self-paced MATH 117) and a 6 earns MATH 120; SL exams earn no credit. |
| University of Texas at Austin | A 3 or 4 on AP Calculus BC earns M 408C, and a 5 earns M 408C or one of several two-course combinations such as M 408K and M 408L. | Math: analysis and approaches HL 5 to 7 earns M 408C (a 4 earns M 408K), and IB Diploma holders can earn up to 24 hours from scores of 4 to 7 on HL and SL exams (certificate students get HL credit only). |
| University of Virginia | UVA generally gives credit for AP scores of 4 or 5, with exceptions that vary by school within the university. | UVA generally gives credit for scores of 5, 6 or 7 on Higher Level IB exams; SL is not addressed. |
| University of California (system-wide) | A 3 or higher on designated AP exams earns credit; AP Calculus BC with a 3 or higher earns 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units. | HL scores of 5, 6 or 7 earn 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units per exam, and an IB Diploma score of 30 or higher adds 6 quarter (4 semester) units. |
| Florida public colleges and universities (statewide ACC policy) | Under the Articulation Coordinating Committee list effective August 2026, a 3 on AP Calculus BC earns MAC X311 (4 credits) and a 4 or 5 earns MAC X311 and X312 (8 credits); public institutions must award at least these minimums. | An IB exam score of 4 earns at least 3 credits and 5 to 7 earns at least 6 credits, with no separate HL or SL minimum and equal credit for diploma and non-diploma students; credit by exam is capped at 45 credits. |
| Williams College | AP results can place students out of intro courses, meet prerequisites or count toward a major with department approval, but cannot accelerate graduation, reduce course load or satisfy distribution requirements; the Class of 2029 guide lists AP Calculus BC 3 to 5 against MATH 151 and 200. | IB HL results follow the same placement-only rules; the Class of 2029 IB guide lists HL Mathematics 6 or 7 against MATH 150, 151 or 200 and does not list SL exams. |
Taking AP and IB courses outside your school
Many ConnectPrep students take an AP or IB course their school does not offer through an accredited online provider, then sit the official exam. Well known options include:
- Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY)Online AP courses such as AP English Language with live sessions. Accredited by the Middle States Association, and CTY states the course is approved by College Board to use the AP designation. Families arrange credit and exam registration through their own school.
- Stanford Online High SchoolAccredited online school (WASC, CAIS) offering single-course enrollment. It has replaced AP-designated courses with its own advanced and university-level courses; students can still sit AP Exams locally.
- Florida Virtual School and FlexPointAbout 20 online AP courses. Free for Florida students; students outside Florida enroll through tuition-based FlexPoint Virtual School. Accredited by Cognia.
- BYU Online High SchoolOnline AP courses including Calculus AB and BC, U.S. History, World History, Psychology and English Language. Accredited by Cognia and the Middle States Association.
- Laurel Springs SchoolAccredited private online school (WASC, Cognia) with more than 60 AP and honors courses, taken full time or one course at a time.
- VHS LearningNonprofit provider with 33 AP options for 2026-27. Students can enroll independently and receive a transcript for local credit. Accredited by MSA-CESS and ACS WASC.
- Pamoja EducationThe IB-approved online provider for IB Diploma courses. Students enroll through their own IB World School coordinator, not on their own. WASC accredited.
Check before enrolling. Any course labeled AP must be authorized through College Board’s AP Course Audit. Search the AP Course Ledger for the provider, and ask your school counselor how the course and credit will appear on your transcript.
Sitting the AP Exam. A student taking an AP course outside school must arrange to test at a local school. Contact AP coordinators early in the fall, since schools order exams by November 13. Homeschooled students and students whose school does not offer the exam can still be added up to the March 12 spring deadline. College Board explains the steps. IB courses through Pamoja are taken through the student’s own IB World School.
