Understanding STAAR

What Is the Texas STAAR Exam?

STAAR, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, is the standardized testing program every Texas public school student must take from grades 3 through high school. It's administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.

For grades 3-8, STAAR covers Reading and Math (every year), Science (grades 5 and 8), and Social Studies (grade 8). In high school, students must pass 5 End-of-Course (EOC) examsAlgebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and US History, as a graduation requirement.

STAAR is delivered online for most students, and recent redesigns include cross-curricular passages, evidence-based writing tasks, and short-answer constructed-response questions, not just multiple choice. Strong STAAR performance opens GT (gifted & talented) placement, dual-credit eligibility, and high school course trackingand underperformance can have real consequences for advancement.

STAAR by Grade Band

Elementary STAAR. Reading and Math every year, Science added in 5th grade. First exposure to standardized testing for most Texas students; sets foundation for middle school placement.

Middle School STAAR. Reading and Math continue. Science added back in 8th. Social Studies in 8th. 8th grade results often drive 9th grade course placement (honors / standard / accelerated).

High School EOC. 5 End-of-Course exams required for graduation: Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, US History. Must pass all 5 (with limited retake allowances) to earn a Texas diploma.

STAAR Tutoring by Grade & Subject

Each STAAR test has its own content map, scoring rubric, and difficulty curve. Our Texas-aligned tutors target the specific TEKS your student needs, whether passing the elementary STAAR or earning Masters-level performance on the high school EOCs.

Why Specialized STAAR Prep Matters

Generic Tutoring Doesn't Move STAAR Scores.

STAAR has a specific TEKS alignment, online format, and constructed-response requirement. Tutors who don't know Texas-specific testing waste your student's prep time.

Our Approach

How ConnectPrep Approaches STAAR Prep

Diagnostic First

Before we build a STAAR prep plan, we run a TEKS-aligned diagnostic in the target grade level and subject. We don't believe in generic study packets. We want to see exactly which standards your student is missing, then build the plan from there.

TEKS-by-TEKS analysis of strengths and weak areas
Honest read on Approaches/Meets/Masters projection

TEKS Mastery

Texas tests against the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), not Common Core. Tutors who teach generic curriculum miss critical Texas-specific content emphasis. We work directly from TEKS, the same standards your student's teacher is using.

Constructed Response

STAAR's redesign emphasizes constructed-response questions, short answers, written explanations, and evidence-based responses. These are where students lose the most points and where targeted coaching makes the biggest score difference.

Common Questions

STAAR Questions, Answered

For grades 3-8, the primary STAAR testing window is in spring (typically April-May). For high school End-of-Course exams, students take EOC tests at the conclusion of the corresponding course, generally in May, with retake opportunities in summer (June) and fall (December). Specific dates vary by district.
STAAR scores fall into four performance bands: Did Not Meet Grade Level (below passing), Approaches Grade Level (the minimum to pass), Meets Grade Level (on grade-level performance), and Masters Grade Level (above grade-level, college-readiness signal). Approaches is the minimum for graduation EOCs.
Texas requires students to pass 5 End-of-Course exams: Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and US History. Each must be passed at "Approaches Grade Level" or higher. There are limited retake opportunities, but consistent failure on EOCs can delay or prevent graduation.
For most students, 2-3 months of focused prep before the spring testing window is ideal. Students with significant skill gaps benefit from starting earlier, sometimes 4-6 months out, especially for 5th, 8th, and EOC exams where stakes are higher. We give you an honest read on timing during the free diagnostic.
As of recent years, STAAR is delivered online for most Texas students, with paper accommodations available for students who need them. Our prep uses online practice items in the same format students encounter on test day to build platform familiarity and reduce surprises.
Both work, and online may actually be better for STAAR specifically because the test itself is computer-based. Practicing online with a tutor builds the same screen-based skills students need on test day. Most ConnectPrep STAAR students work entirely online via live 1-on-1 sessions.
