New York is the only place in America where a student might sit for four different high-stakes admissions exams before their 17th birthday — ISEE at 10, SHSAT at 13, then the SAT with a college list where 1500 is table stakes. We’ve guided students through every leg of that relay, from Brooklyn brownstone kitchens to Great Neck dining rooms, and the single biggest thing we bring is sequence: treating it as one campaign instead of four panics.

Score Context

Testing in New York: SHSAT, ISEE, SAT — and What Scores Actually Compete

New York students often face three separate high-stakes testing gauntlets before college applications even begin: the ISEE or SSAT for independent school admissions, the SHSAT for the city’s specialized high schools, and then the Digital SAT or ACT. At the city’s top independent schools and at Long Island districts like Great Neck, Manhasset, Jericho, and Syosset, successful applicants to Ivy-tier colleges typically submit 1500+ — these are some of the deepest applicant pools in the country, and admissions readers evaluate scores against each school’s profile.

Because each exam feeds the next stage of admissions, we sequence them as one multi-year plan rather than isolated sprints.

How It Works

In-Person and Online Sessions in NYC & Long Island

NYC and Long Island programs are online-first by design — it’s how the city’s busiest students actually train — with premium in-person options:

  • Live online (most common): 1:1 Zoom sessions with a shared digital whiteboard and document workspace, scheduled around commutes, athletics, and rehearsals. Same senior tutors as in-person — there is no online-only tier.
  • Premium in-person: in-home sessions available in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Nassau County’s North Shore, subject to tutor availability.
  • Practice testing: full-length, Bluebook-aligned digital practice SATs administered remotely under timed conditions, with question-by-question review afterward.

Common Questions

NYC & Long Island Tutoring & Admissions FAQs

Do you offer in-person tutoring in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Long Island?

Yes — premium in-person sessions are available in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island’s North Shore communities, subject to tutor availability. Most NYC families run their programs primarily online, which gives them the full senior tutor roster and the most flexible scheduling, and add in-person sessions where it helps.

Do you prepare students for the SHSAT?

Yes. We run 1:1 SHSAT prep for students targeting Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, and the other specialized high schools — covering both the ELA and math sections with full-length timed practice. SHSAT prep typically begins in the spring or summer before 8th grade.

Which NYC private schools do your students attend?

Our students attend Horace Mann, Trinity, Dalton, Collegiate, Brearley, Spence, Riverdale, Packer Collegiate, and Saint Ann’s, among others. We also run ISEE/SSAT prep and admissions advising for families applying into these schools.

What SAT score does a student at a top NYC private school need?

For Ivy-and-peer-tier applications from the city’s leading independent schools, competitive scores are typically 1500 or above — these schools send deep cohorts to top colleges, and scores are read against the school profile. Our Elite Bootcamp programs are built specifically for students pushing from the mid-1400s into the 1500s.

Do you work with Long Island families?

Yes — Great Neck, Manhasset, Port Washington, Roslyn, Syosset, Jericho, and Garden City are among our most active communities. Long Island programs run primarily online with premium in-person availability on the North Shore.

Can you handle both Regents exams and SAT prep?

Yes, and sequencing matters: June Regents season lands close to key SAT dates. We plan both calendars together so a student isn’t cramming Algebra II Regents material the same week as a target SAT sitting.

How do online sessions actually work?

Live 1:1 video via Zoom with a shared digital whiteboard and document workspace. Students complete Bluebook-aligned practice tests under timed conditions, and tutors review every missed question. Session recordings are available on request, and scheduling flexes across time zones and school calendars.

My student is applying to both private school and eventually college. Can one firm handle both?

Yes — that continuity is a core ConnectPrep advantage. The same firm that runs your ISEE prep and independent school advising in 6th grade can carry your student through SAT prep and college counseling in 11th, with full knowledge of their academic history.
