The Transfer Process
When is the right time to start planning a college transfer?
Ideally, as early as the first semester of college. Transfer deadlines at many schools fall in January–March for fall admission, so students who start planning in the fall of sophomore year are typically well-positioned. However, ConnectPrep works with students at every stage — including those with shorter timelines. Contact us and we’ll build a realistic roadmap for your situation.
How is the transfer application different from a freshman application?
Transfer applications place far greater weight on your college GPA and course rigor than on high school performance. Furthermore, the transfer essay — particularly the “why transfer” question — is evaluated very differently from a common app personal statement. Admissions officers want to see intellectual maturity, a clear reason for transferring, and a specific vision for what you want from the new school. Can students transfer to highly selective schools like the Ivies?
Yes — though many elite schools accept very few transfer students and the process is extremely competitive.
