Education ROI and student debt calculator

Compare two paths, such as an MBA versus staying in your job, or an apprenticeship versus a four-year degree. See total cost, what you would owe, monthly payments, when the investment breaks even, and how sensitive that answer is to your assumptions.

Scenario projection Results are transparent what-if models using your inputs. They are not forecasts, guarantees, or financial advice. Your numbers stay in your browser and are never sent to ConnectPrep.

Pathway A

Source: Gambling change persons and booth cashiers: 25th percentile wage, all workers (BLS OEWS May 2025). Used as a cautious proxy for early career pay.

Occupation wages cover all workers, so new entrants often earn closer to the lower percentiles.

How this calculator works

  1. Each year is either a study year or a work year. Study years add tuition, fees, and any extra living costs, minus grants, increasing with the tuition growth rate you set.
  2. The share you borrow is disbursed during each study year. An origination fee is added to the amount owed, and unsubsidized interest accrues until study ends. Repayment then follows a fixed monthly payment over the term you choose.
  3. Net cash flow each year is earnings minus out-of-pocket education costs minus loan payments, before taxes. The break-even year is the first year Pathway A's cumulative net catches Pathway B's and stays ahead.
  4. Present value discounts future amounts at your discount rate. Scenarios change Pathway A's starting earnings and growth; sensitivity changes one input at a time.

Limitations: taxes, employer tuition benefits, income-driven repayment (RAP), forgiveness programs, and investment returns are not modeled. Occupation wages describe all workers, not new graduates, and program earnings describe past cohorts. See the full methodology.
