Military Entrance Exam Prep
Quick Answer
The ASVAB has 9 subtests. Your AFQT score — built from just 4 of them — determines branch eligibility. Your line scores determine which jobs you qualify for. ConnectPrep prepares you for both, with a 4–10 week 1:1 program built around your specific branch and MOS target.
1:1 ASVAB tutoring covering all 9 subtests — from AFQT fundamentals to specialty line scores. Westport, CT and online nationwide.
Minimum AFQT by Branch
These are the floors — the minimum AFQT to enlist. Higher scores unlock more MOS options, signing bonuses, and advancement. We recommend targeting 10+ points above your branch minimum from day one.
Minimum scores are thresholds, not targets. Candidates who score at the minimum often find their MOS options significantly limited and may be ineligible for bonuses. ConnectPrep programs are designed to push students well above minimum — typically targeting 10–20 points higher than the branch floor based on the student's specific job goals.
The 9 Subtests
The ASVAB is not a single test — it's nine. Four build your AFQT. All nine feed your line scores. Here's exactly what each subtest covers.

How AFQT Is Calculated
The VE (Verbal Expression) composite combines Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. Your raw scores are converted using standard score tables, then your percentile is calculated against a nationally representative sample of 18–23 year olds. A score of 50 means you scored higher than exactly half of that sample — the national median. Most desirable MOS options require 50+.
MOS Qualification
Your AFQT gets you in the door. Your line scores — composites built from specific subtest combinations — determine which jobs you can actually have. Here's how each branch calculates them.

The ConnectPrep Method
Every ConnectPrep ASVAB program starts with a diagnostic and builds a week-by-week plan around your specific branch, MOS target, and test date. No two programs are identical.
Full proctored diagnostic followed by branch and MOS review. We identify your exact AFQT gap and which line scores need improvement for your specific job targets. Then we build the plan.
Days 1–3
Deep work on the four AFQT subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. These four drive the score that determines enlistment eligibility — they get the most time.
Weeks 1–3
Targeted work on the specialty subtests that matter for your branch and job: General Science, Electronics, Mechanical Comprehension, Auto & Shop, Assembling Objects. Focused on your specific MOS composite requirements.
Weeks 2–6
Full-length timed ASVAB simulations under both CAT and P&P conditions. Pacing, stamina, and test-day strategy. Final review of persistent weak areas. Logistics and what to expect at MEPS.
Final 1–2 Weeks
What's Included
Typically 2 sessions per week, 60–90 minutes each. No group classes, no pre-recorded videos — every minute is focused on you.
Official-format practice tests administered under timed conditions with complete subtest-by-subtest score reports after every session.
Your program is built around your specific branch and job goals — not a generic curriculum. Line score targets are set on day one based on your MOS shortlist.
For students who have already tested, we analyze previous scores and build a targeted retake plan — we don't restart from scratch.
Preparation for both the Computer Adaptive Test (MEPS) and Paper & Pencil formats. Different timing, different strategy — we cover both.
Ongoing performance tracking across all 9 subtests with plan adjustments each week. You always know exactly where you stand vs. your targets.
Who We Work With
ConnectPrep ASVAB students range from high school seniors taking the test for the first time to active duty service members aiming to reclassify into a new MOS.
Juniors and seniors exploring military service alongside civilian college options. Often taking the Student ASVAB at school and then the MEPS version later. We prepare for both.
Students who've committed to enlisting and have a specific branch and MOS goal in mind. The program is built entirely around hitting the exact line score combination they need.
Students who tested once but scored below their MOS requirement. We analyze the previous score report, identify specific gaps, and build a targeted retake program — no starting from scratch.
Candidates who need strong GT scores (110+) for Officer Candidate School or Warrant Officer programs. The GT composite — VE + AR — is the critical target for this track.
Students targeting competitive programs — Navy Nuclear (NF program, 290 composite), SEAL (AFQT 78+), Special Forces (GT 110+ with combat line scores) — that require near-perfect subtest performance.
Active duty or reserve members aiming to reclassify into a new MOS that requires improved line scores. Same program structure, compressed timeline.

"I had taken the ASVAB once and barely passed the Army minimum. My recruiter said I needed a 110 GT for the MOS I wanted. ConnectPrep focused entirely on that — and I hit 118. Got my first choice."
"I scored a 42 on my first attempt and needed a 65 for the Navy rating I wanted. In 6 weeks with ConnectPrep I went from 42 to 71. The math sessions made the biggest difference."
"Math is not my strong suit. My ConnectPrep tutor broke down the arithmetic reasoning section in a way that finally clicked. I went from a 33 to a 58 AFQT in 8 weeks — Air Force accepted."
Common Questions
What ASVAB score do I need to join the military?
Each branch sets its own minimum AFQT: Army (31), Navy (35), Marines (32), Air Force and Space Force (36), Coast Guard (40). These are enlistment thresholds — higher scores unlock better MOS options and signing bonuses. We recommend targeting 10+ points above your branch minimum.
What is the AFQT and how is it calculated?
AFQT stands for Armed Forces Qualifying Test. It is a percentile score (1–99) derived from four ASVAB subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge. The formula is AR + MK + VE (VE = WK + PC combined). It compares you to a nationally representative sample of 18–23 year olds. A 50 is exactly average nationally.
What are line scores and why do they matter?
Line scores are composite numbers calculated from specific subtest combinations. Each branch uses different formulas. The Army uses scores like GT (VE + AR), EL (GS + AR + MK + EI), and ST (GS + VE + MK) to determine MOS eligibility. Your AFQT qualifies you for enlistment; your line scores determine which jobs you can actually have.
Can I retake the ASVAB if I don't like my score?
Yes. After your first attempt, you must wait 30 days to retake. Then another 30 days before a third attempt. After a third attempt, a 6-month wait applies. Recruiters see all scores. Retaking without structured preparation rarely improves scores significantly — ConnectPrep builds focused plans for retakers based on their specific subtest gaps.
What is the difference between the CAT-ASVAB and paper ASVAB?
The CAT-ASVAB (Computer Adaptive Test) is administered at MEPS. It adapts question difficulty based on your answers — you can't skip questions or go back. It uses fewer questions than the paper version. The P&P-ASVAB (paper and pencil) is given at satellite testing locations and high schools. You can skip questions and return. ConnectPrep prepares students for both formats and strategies.
How long does ASVAB prep take?
Most students prepare in 4–10 weeks, depending on their starting score and target. Students with significant AFQT gaps (20+ points needed) typically take 8–10 weeks. Students targeting specific line scores for high-demand MOS options may need more time for specialty subtests. ConnectPrep builds the timeline around your specific test date.
Does ConnectPrep offer online ASVAB tutoring?
Yes. All ConnectPrep ASVAB programs are available fully online via video session, serving students nationwide. In-person sessions are available in Westport, CT and surrounding Fairfield County, CT. The curriculum and diagnostic process are identical regardless of format.
What score do I need for Navy Nuclear or SEAL programs?
Navy Nuclear Field (NF): requires a composite score of 290 on VE + AR + MK + GS — among the highest academic requirements in military enlisting. Navy SEAL (SO): requires an AFQT of 78+ plus physical standards. Army Special Forces: GT of 110+ combined with combat-related line scores. ConnectPrep has specific preparation tracks for these programs.
